The Metropolis 2007 Pre-Conference Tours are designed
to give delegates the opportunity to gain first-hand
knowledge and experience of cultural diversity in
Australian life and its institutions in the state
of Victoria . Each tour is designed to highlight
a different aspect of Australia 's distinctive and
creative experience of managing cultural diversity.
The tours will visit government agencies, community
programs, non-government organisations, refugee
and migrant advocacy bodies, cultural institutions
and educational bodies to allow delegates to experience
Australian multiculturalism as developed through
various forms of public policy and practice.
There are nine themed tours to select from. Delegates
should nominate their first and second preferences.
Places on each tour are limited, and will be assigned
on a first come-first served basis.

Timing
Delegates are asked to meet in the foyer of the
Sofitel (conference venue) at 9.30am on Monday 8
October. Individual tours will be clearly signed,
and volunteers and tour hosts will have a list of
delegates registered for each tour.
The tour buses will leave promptly at 10.00am and
will return to the hotel by 4.00pm at the latest.
Each tour lasts around five hours, including time
for lunch, will be at the delegate's additional
expense.
Buses will then return to the hotel at 5.45 to
collect delegates for the Government House welcome
reception.
Metropolis 2007 Social Program
Delegates to Metropolis 2007 will enjoy a series
of social events and activities designed to demonstrate
the diversity of Australian society and culture,
and to highlight the best of Melbourne 's many attractions.
Monday 8 October
Welcome
Reception Government House, Melbourne
6.30pm 8.00pm
The patron of the 12 th International Metropolis
Conference and Governor of Victoria , Professor
David de Kretser, A.C., will welcome delegates to
the conference at an evening reception at Government
House. Delegates will be greeted by didgeridoo and
a Welcome to Country from an Elder of the Wurundjeri
Tribe of the Kulin Nation, the traditional owners
of the land on which Government House, and Melbourne
, was built.
Tuesday 9 October

Dinner Melbourne Town
Hall
6.30pm
Melbourne Lord Mayor, the Hon. John So, will host
the Conference Dinner at the magnificent, heritage-listed
Melbourne Town Hall . Located in the heart of Melbourne
, the building was completed in 1870 and is the
hub of the city's cultural and civic activity.
Wednesday 10 October
Victorian
Multicultural Commission Reception
6.00pm 8.00pm
The Great Hall at the National Gallery of Victoria
is the venue for the Victorian Multicultural Commission
Reception on Wednesday evening. Under Leonard French's
stunning stained glass ceiling, delegates will enjoy
entertainment by Melbourne-based artists from diverse
cultural backgrounds.
Thursday 11 October
The 2007 Melbourne International Arts Festival
kicks off on Thursday evening, with a tremendous
line-up of Opening Night events. From 6.00pm, in
Federation Square , the opening night party, featuring Dan
Zanes and Friends, will be free for all
on the outdoor stage.
The Festival continues until 27 October 2007,
providing conference delegates with the opportunity
to extend their stay in Melbourne and sample some
of the world's most innovative art and theatre productions.
